Fredericton Student Wins Scouts Canada Scholarship

Fredericton, NB – July 17 – Chris Arsenault of Fredericton was selected as one of the exceptional Canadian youth to receive this year’s Scouts Canada Scholarship. Awarded for a combination of academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, and volunteerism in Scouting, the scholarship provides $1000 towards the post-secondary education of 15 of the most outstanding youth in Canada every year.  Chris is the first New Brunswick youth to receive this highly competitive national scholarship in over 5 years.

Chris has been involved in Scouting since the age of 5, when he first joined as a Beaver Scout. His crowning achievement as a Scout saw him receiving the prestigious Chief Scout Award, the highest award in Canadian Scouting. Over 13 years in, Chris attributes his time in Scouting as being the most formative experience in his development as a young leader.

“My years in Scouting have helped me become a confident, competent, and well-rounded young man,” said Chris. “There have been no better teachers in my life than Scouters.”

In addition to his lifetime of participation in Scouting, Chris is a top student and an active community leader at the Fredericton High School. His passion for helping people drew him to become the Chair of the FHS Red Cross Team, where he leads a group of students in responding to medical emergencies; and the founder of the FHS Gay-Straight Alliance, which promotes diversity and human rights. He is also an active member of the FHS Environmental Club, a photographer for the yearbook, and an officer of the Grad Committee. In his free time, Chris plays piano, writes, and competes in mountain bike races.

Chris will be studying towards a degree in biochemistry at Mount Allison University next year, with the intention of pursuing a career in medicine. He plans to start a new Rover Scout (Scouts for ages 18-26) group at Mount Alison with other university students, to serve the community and help give back to the movement that has been so influential in his life.
